The Basque chefs at Donostia really know what they’re doing in their frighteningly efficient (tiny) kitchen. Seriously, look no further than Donostia for the very best authentic, traditional Basque Cuisine in London.
Whatever the weather, you absolutely must book – this place is POPULAR, a detriment to it’s success. They have managed to fit about 50 covers into a small cosy space. Choose an intimate seat at the bar and watch the chefs prep dishes, in what may seem like an impossibly small space, but it clearly works! Alternatively, choose a quieter seat around the sides of the dining room, the service is second to none. Designed as a modern take on a Basque kitchen/dining room with rich dark furniture & white walls – it’s simplistic, the point being to leave all attention on the food.
Drink: Start with some light entertainment with a Sagardoa – Basque Natural Cider which the waiter will pour into your glass from 1 meter high, I found this hugely entertaining. Then for wine – The Fincas de Landaluce Crianza 2010, Rioja is lively & delicious – great one to accompany the meats or the fish.
Food: Choose from beautiful plates of aged Iberico hams to fresh scallops or monkfish to the most PERFECT creamy croquets which I swear will be the most heavenly croquets to ever enter your mouth…(spotted in the bottom left of the below pic).
You cannot leave until you have tried the Bakailoa dish (can come in various forms) – I was lucky enough to get my hands on the crispy fried cod cheeks with black squid ink aioli which was…IS, an awesome dish.
Big respect for this place. Keep doing what you’re doing Donostia!
