Just two minutes walk from Fulham Broadway is this gorgeous little European bistro, which prior to a couple of weeks back was unknown to me.
Manuka Kitchen was born in October 2012 as a celebration for ‘A love of food, wine, friends, and a knack for putting the three together in a way that’s unforgettable.’ – How refreshingly simple.
With only 22 covers it’s a thimble-sized room of happiness. Wooden tables, terracotta tiles and whitewash walls make Manuka Kitchen naturally calming. Daily newspapers and magazines are scattered about, it feels as comforting as a restaurant popping up in your own sitting room.
The menu is created with the expertise of kiwi chef Tyler Martin. Noticeably seasonal; in the winter they’re heavy on pigeon, duck and venison with lamb pork and chicken featuring more in warmer months, and a consistent presence of market fresh fish all year round.
A group of us walked in on Sunday afternoon last week and were lucky enough to be seated straight away. Manuka’s brunch menu is served until 3pm from Friday-Sunday and proved popular with us. I chose their beautifully simple Eggs Benedict with chilli and avocado (£8.50), whilst the boys both chose the 8oz Bavette steak, eggs & onions (£9.50).
The fourth order was the delicately flavoured roasted market fish (salmon on our day), orange vegetables, samphire aioli, stem broccoli (£14.95)
Joseph Antipp is behind the wine menu covering decent new and old world bottles, all of which are sub £30. English largers and a few classic cocktails round off the drinks list.
The nutritionally respected and distinctively flavoured Manuka Honey features only in a couple of dish dishes and a couple of desserts which is a sweet touch. Pots-to-go are on display, you can pick one up as a momoir…
With ever-sprawling chains (a filthy word!) of restaurants creeping through Fulham, Manuka Kitchen is a diamond in the rough. It’s getting red-hot reviews and you may find yourself with a two week wait for a seat, it’s a success story thus far. Let’s Tyler Martin and Joseph Antipp reproduce. In the meantime i’m on a mission to find something this good locally to myself in Battersea…
