The George Yarmouth Isle of Wight

THE GEORGE HOTEL, ISLE OF WIGHT

London is at its best in Summer – from Pimms in the park to river walks and long lunches in beer gardens, I like to be outside in Summer. On the odd weekend I will leave our fantastic city and head South to the coast for a mental detox. My most memorable meal of last summer was at The George hotel in Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight. I was on the Isle for the weekend when my boyfriend and I were wandering around Yarmouth looking for a good spot to drink a bottle of rosé and see the sun set and were recommended The George.

We settled in at a waterfront table and ordered a bottle of a crisp blush provincial rosé when we were presented with a menu for Isla’s Conservatory, the relaxed dining arm of the hotels restaurant, run by a critically acclaimed chef. We hadn’t planned on eating but The George’s menu was simply stunning, so we decided to settle in for the evening. To start we shared grilled, locally caught mackerel with a ceviche of island tomatoes, red onion, lime and coriander as well as yellow fin tuna and island tomato salad with cucumber and rapeseed oil. Both were simple, clean and delicious. Emphasis is put on sourcing only the very best ingredients from the local area (although I haven’t seen a tuna in the Solent recently) and not messing around with it. Cook it well and simply and you can’t go wrong. Pudding saw us fight over the last mouthfuls of a salted caramel mouse, dark chocolate brownie and peanut ice cream, which was nothing short of a gift from god. The view and sun set is pretty unbeatable. If I had more time I would have stayed in one of the beautiful rooms and tried Isla’s fine dining offering. Next time…
